The President of the Nigeria Football Federation Alhaji Aminu Maigari has confirmed that Nigeria may withdraw from the Championship for Africa Nations if the money to prosecute the competition for home-based players in the continent is not available.
There has been talk that Nigeria has pulled out of CHAN qualifier with Cote d’Ivoire due to the paucity of funds at the football ruling body.
But Maigari told Complete Sports at the weekend that Nigeria will be forced to withdraw if efforts to raise money to prosecute CHAN failed to yield dividends by this month.
“We are yet to withdraw from CHAN but we might if our financial condition does not improve. The truth is that we are broke and unless we get special grant from government, our chances of participating are very slim.
“It is worrisome that we found ourselves in this financial mess after winning AFCON, we found ourselves in this kind of situation not due to any fault of ours. The massive slash in our budget and the fact that the usually grants for AfCON and other major competitions were not given by government.
“We are making efforts to raise funds to ensure that our home based boys who have been camping for over one year get the chance to exhibit their talents in the CHAN tournament. We want to be there but if we don’t have the money to take part, we shall formally write CAF to with draw,” he stated.
Nigeria has yet to qualify for any edition of CHAN losing first to Niger and then to Ghana in the two previous editions.
