A special Anti-robbery team of the Bayelsa State Police Command, yesterday, thwarted the attempt by a robbery gang to attack a popular commercial Bank in the State, killing two and arresting one.
The failed bank robbery came on the heels of gunmen’s invasion of the venue of salary payment to Bayelsa United Football club members and carted away N6.2m wage being paid to the staff of the club.
Another version of the incident, however indicated that the failed bank robbery occurred on Monday night and was staged by a group of hoodlums and that one of the gang members arrested sustained bullet wounds during a shoot out with the police.
LEADERSHIP gathered that the robbers had disembarked from a jeep and moved towards the premises of the new generation bank along the Sani Abacha road at about 3am before the men of the Special Anti-Robbery squad swooped on them following a distress call. The suspected robbers opened fire on the team of policemen.
The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Bayelsa State, Deputy Superintendent of Police DSP, Fidelis Odunna who confirmed the robbery, said the police killed one of the robbers in a shootout, while one of them with deep bullet wound was arrested.
Odunna said the robbers stormed the bank at about 3am with black jeep and sharp objects, but gallant police men foiled the attempt.
