The police in Lagos on Thursday charged three women, Awunli Obi, Franca Otote and Tina Okafor, before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court for alleged prostitution.
Mses. Obi, 28; Otote, 24; and Okafor, 24 are facing a one-count charge of loitering and soliciting for prostitution.
The prosecutor, Daniel Ighodalo, told the court that the accused allegedly committed the crime at about 2 a.m. on May 2 along Admiralty Way, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.
He said that the women were loitering and soliciting male passers-by for sex before a police patrol team subsequently arrested them.
“Okafor claimed to be a marketer with Wade Oil and Gas Ltd., Lekki, Phase 1 and that they were on the street at that time because they were refused entry into a night club because of their dressing.
“Otote said she had no job and was waiting for her boyfriend to come pick her up.
“Obi on her part admitted being a commercial sex worker and claimed that the seven condoms found in her bag were for her protection,” Mr. Ighodalo said.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 166 (1) (a) (ii) of the Criminal Code Laws of Lagos State, 2011, adding that it attracts a fine of N15, 000, if convicted.
The accused persons, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The magistrate, O. M. Ajayi, granted them bail in the sum of N40, 000 with one surety each and adjourned the case to May 9.
