The Nigerian Army has stationed a regiment at Ogbakuba Community in Ogbaru Local Government Area, where 23 illegal bunkering refineries were uncovered.
A joint operation by the Army and the Navy uncovered 23 illegal small `refineries’ on the River Niger coastline in Ogbakuba Community.
A team of army engineers from 14 Field Engineering Regiment, Onitsha, had started using cylinder gas to cut the various equipment used by the bunkerers.
The officers and soldiers deployed from the regiment had kept watch over the movement of illegal refiners on the River Niger and other adjoining communities.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Enugu, Ashimiyu Olaniyi, had stated that the army would intensify efforts to stop illegal refineries and oil bunkering in the South-East and South-South.
“The Chief of Army Staff has directed that these activities and other crimes within the coastline and creeks of the River Niger must be stopped. The Nigerian Army will not relent in its duties to put an end to oil bunkering.
“And there will be zero tolerance of such activities and other crimes committed in the River Niger and its creeks,’’ he said.
