"10 Million Children Die Before Five"

Over 10 million children in low and middle income countries like Nigeria die before they reach five years,  says the Secretary of Federal Capital Territory Health and Human Services Secretariat, Dr. Demola Onakomaiya.

Onakomaiya, who gave the figure while inaugurating the Immunization Technical Advisory Committee in the FCT, blamed the development  on lack of  access to  effective interventions that   combat common and preventable childhood illnesses.

“The FCT immunisation programming and service delivery both for routine immunization and supplemental immunisation activities has suffered setbacks in the recent past with coverage rates for routine antigens falling below 90 percent confirmed Polio cases after being polio free for about two years,” he said in a statement on Wednesday  by the Head, Public Relations Unit of HHSS, Salisu Yakasai.

According to him, observations and statistics have brought to the fore, the clinical and urgent need to implore and “maintain high vaccination coverage rates to counter the disproportionate burden from vaccine preventable diseases.”
