Akwa Ibom State Community in Lagos has donated N3m worth of foodstuffs, clothing, noodles, among others to widows and less-privileged natives of the state in Lagos.
President, AKISCOM, Mr. Elijah Ifot, during the distribution of the items on Saturday, said about 2,000 persons benefited from the largesse.
He said the programme was supported by public-spirited individuals from Akwa Ibom.
Ifot hoped that the government would be involved in subsequent distribution to cater for more beneficiaries.
He said, “About 2000 widows and less privileged benefited from the largesse. We realise that a lot of our people here (in Lagos) are suffering. That is why we started this programme as our token to assist the widows and the vulnerable.
“We hope that this programme will be an annual event. However, women wing will continue taking care of the widows.”
Two widows, Idara John and Scholar Ekpo, commended AKISCOM for the programme.
They urged the association’s executive to reach out to the government of Akwa Ibom to be able to extend the gesture to their children for scholarship and other forms of empowerment.
