Plateau Says No to Creation of State 4 years ago 39

Plateau State Government has expressed concern over the agitation in some quarters for the creation of a new state out of the present Plateau, noting that such may cause disaffection and weaken the unity among the people. It noted that “government will not support or endorse the creation of a new state for now.”

Briefing journalists in Jos after the State Executive Council meeting, the state Commissioner of Information and Communication, Pastor Yiljap Abraham, said the though “the Plateau State Government is not opposed to genuine demand for state creation that meet constitutional requirements and follow due consultations with the stakeholders, government however cautions against the agitation for a new state out of the present Plateau that is tainted and ill-motivated as an extension of earlier calls by vested interests outside the state for the dismemberment of the state.”

He said the council was also worried that some requests are aimed at discrediting the lofty and well-known and acclaimed achievements of the Redemption Agenda and distabilising the government.

“Let it be known that the Government of Plateau State is working harder by the day to raise the tempo and scope of the development which touches directly on the lives of the people of the state.

“Government will therefore resist attempts to weaken the unity of the state and further expose the people to greater insecurity and a return to a no-development platform of the past. Plateau State faces numerous security challenges and  won’t wish to be distracted.
