There was gnashing of teeth at the FCT Zone 2 guest house of the Nigeria Premier League (NPL), as occupants hurriedly vacated the building to avoid the embarrassment of throwing their personal belongings outside following the expiration of the eviction deadline the landlord gave to them.
Daily Sunsports correspondent, who visited the guest house yesterday, gathered that the eviction order, which was issued since six months ago by a property manager, Atabor Cosmos & Associates due to the inability of the league body to meet up with its annual rent obligation of N10million expired today.
The guest house, comprising six units of three bedroom flats, which has already been put up for rent at the rate of N12million (N2million each flat), was one of the legacies the Chief Oyuki Obaseki-led league board banqueted before leaving office.
The property manager, who spoke to Daily Sunsports, said the quit order became necessary because since the league board could not afford to pay for the one year rent arrears of N10million, it would be difficult for them to pay the new rent of N12million.
“We were not the firm that rented the guest house to NPL, but we issued the quit order. We issued it since six months ago and by our calculations, the deadline has elapsed. As I speak with you, they still owe the landlord one year rent arrears of N10 million.
“The property is six units of three bedroom flats and it is going for a new rate of N12million, that is N2million per flat. “We insisted that NPL must vacate the building because if they could not pay the N10million arrears, it would be difficult for them to pay for the new rent.
“The truth is that we want corporate bodies that will use the property as office blocks or guest house,” Atabor Cosmos & Associates, who displayed notice at the gate of the guest house, told Daily Sunsports on telephone yesterday.
Meanwhile, one of the occupants, who was seen parking his belongings yesterday, told Daily Sunsports on anonymity that he did not need any distraction in order to beat the deadline, stressing: “You saw it yourself.
I have to leave because I don’t need any embarrassment from security agents. “I have made an alternative arrangement since NPL is not ready to renew the rent.”
