Nine persons were killed on Wednesday evening when a Toyota Hiace and a Volkswagen Audi 80 saloon collided along the Ogoja-Calabar Highway.

The casualties comprised six males and two females. Their corpses were brought by rescuers who used axes and machetes to cut the vehicles open.

An eyewitness said the crash, which occurred about 6pm at Esinjok village when the bus, which was heading towards Ogoja, was overtaking a trailer.

The eyewitness, who identified himself as John Ebile, told PUNCH Metro on Thursday that the bus was unable to overtake the trailer before the appearance of the Audi.

He said, “The trailer was moving very fast, unfortunately the bus could not overtake it before it collided with an Audi 80, which also did not slow down.”

Two of the three occupants of the Audi 80 car were said to have died on the spot while six passengers in the bus also died instantly.

Others, according to Ebile, sustained severe injuries. “Some of them may not be able to walk again because their legs were badly affected,” he added.

Those who sustained injuries were taken to the General Hospital, Ogoja while the corpses of the dead were deposited at the hospital’s mortuary.

One of the injured commuters, identified as Agnes Oleka, said the bus which belongs to Imo Transport Corporation was on its way to Ogoja from Enugu.

When contacted, Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Ogoja, Mr. Kagho Odafe, said the accident was caused by over speeding and reckless driving of the drivers.
