Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, who unveiled a 23-page document on the projects at a private sector engagement forum in Lagos, said through the celebration, the country hopes to tell its story and develop initiatives as well as projects that would enhance the development of the nation.

Anyim explained that the projects to be undertaken would be fully funded by the private sector, saying that "the Federal Government will not spend any kobo on it."

Throwing more light on the proposed centenary city, he explained that the city was conceived to focus the attention of the investing world on Nigeria.

"The successes of such cities as Dubai, Monaco, Shenzhen, Singapore and lately Songdo have shown that development of certain class of cities is the strongest social, political and economic tool to securing foreign investment, promoting positive international attention and indeed signalling a new national economic awakening.

"We promise Mr. President that in two years’ time, this city will emerge as the most outstanding legacy of his administration," he added.

He further described the proposed centenary city as a new ‘smart city’ to be built on more than 1,000 hectares of land along Airport Road in Abuja.

Anyim revealed that President Goodluck Jonathan would formerly inaugurate the centenary celebration on February 4, 2013.

He added: "On January 1, 1914, the Northern and Southern protectorates of Nigeria were formally amalgamated into one country, establishing modern day Nigeria. January 1, 2014, marks 100 years of our union as a nation.

"Notwithstanding our struggles and challenges, this is an epoch deserving of celebration by the citizens and government of Nigeria."
