Onwamaegbu made the appeal on Monday in Kaduna at the opening of the 2013 first quarter training for Army Public Relations Officers in the 1 Division of the Nigerian Army.

He said, "You must tell the story as it is.

"Having looked at the theme of the gathering in this period, it is essentially on how you would tell the story of the Nigerian Army in the face of the contemporary challenges we are facing.

"It is not business as usual; these are very challenging times. It means you have to be very innovative in what you do as PR officers. It is not the season of been just reactionary, waiting for a story to be told before you react."

Onwamaegbu also advised them to make information available to the media, even before they seek it, to avoid sensationalism and misrepresentation.

He added, "Go and tell the stories of what you are doing, especially in this challenging time, let the public start appreciating all the good work the Nigerian Army is doing.

"Let the tax payers start appreciating that all the taxes they are paying are not going in vain, but that the army is well utilising these monies."

The commandant also spoke on the contributions of the army and other security agencies in addressing the prevailing insecurity bedevilling the country.

He said, "Without the contributions of the Nigerian army as a whole, the security situation in the country today would have deteriorated to more than what it is.

"The public is not aware of that, we must let the public know that. So it behoves you the PR officers to tell that story."

Also, the General Officer Commanding 1 Division, Maj.-Gen. Garba Wahab, said the training was part of efforts to engage members of the public in "fighting terrorism and insurgency in the country".
