Why Herdsmen And Farmers Clash

Kaduna State Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Ramalan Giwa says elite and traditional rulers are responsible for clashes between herdsmen and farmers in the country.

Speaking yesterday at a stakeholder’s sensitization meeting on stock route development in Kaduna state organized by the National Livestock Projects Division, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the commissioner said, “This is because the elite and traditional rulers sell out the land that gazetted for grazing reserves for pastoralists”.

Chairman, Zaria chapter of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders’ Association of Nigeria Umar Abubakar said past governments had laid down grazing reserves, but encroachment by farmers had taken over the land gazetted as grazing reserves.

The director , North-West, Agricultural Transformation Agenda, Leo Nyam  said 85 percent of the national herd was in the hands of pastoralists who erre supposed to reside in grazing reserves.
