The Director of FCT Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) Col. Wilson Alade (rtd), has blamed the insecurity in the federal Capital City (FCC) on activities of motorcyclists operating in the city.

The director who disclosed this to newsmen yesterday, said that the directorate had impounded over 270 commercial motorcycles in the last four days in conjunction with other security personnel, adding that it would soon begin impounding tricycles, popularly called Keke NAPEP.

He said, “Of recent, we have been having challenges especially in the area of security and it has been traced more to the recklessness of Okada riders within the FCC. We have in our cache about 270 motorcycles and the number will keep increasing on a daily basis until they are ready to comply with our directives.

“We will not deter until we get it totally eradicated from the FCC including Keke NAPEP operators who have refused to move their businesses to the rural areas and estates.

Alade regretted that despite the ban, motorcyclists were recalcitrant, adding, “we have been doing a lot of sensitisation, advocacy and impoundment but despite this, they have been recalcitrant. Presently, we have a newly constituted taskforce comprising VIO personnel, the military, civil defence and other security agencies whose sole aim is to ensure that we eradicate okada usage in Abuja.

“We started the enforcement about four days ago and the programme is on until we ensure that there are no single commercial motorcyclists operating within the restricted areas in the city such as Area 1 Junction, Durumi, Lokogoma, AYA junction, the entire stretch of Airport Road, Gishiri and some areas within Life Camp.”

On why other security agencies were drafted into the taskforce, he said, “Okada riders are always armed with dangerous weapons which they use as defense mechanisms to resist arrest and on several occasions during the course of the enforcement, our men have been badly injured.”
