Kaduna State Governor, Patrick Yakowa, has refuted a video which shows an evacuation of corpses from the streets as being from Kaduna.
The video contains grainy images of heaps of dead bodies being handled by security forces. In a statement, Reuben Buhari, spokesman to the governor, said it was obvious that the objective of those spreading it was to tarnish the image of the state, truncate the peace building process in place and pit the adherents of its two major religions against each other.
“For the avoidance of doubt, it is pertinent to mention that the scene in the video was not shot in Kaduna state as can be seen from the abundance of neems trees in the background and the accent of some of the people speaking in the video is completely alien to people of Kaduna,” the statement said. “The police Van in the background also show that it is not from Kaduna State.”
It urged the people to ignore the video as it is a deliberate effort by certain individuals to kindle and fan the embers of religious and ethnic differences amongst inhabitants of our state. A source said that the rattled governor got wind of the clips last night and held an emergency meeting to ascertain its authenticity.
“After, it became clear that it was his opponents that are responsible for the clips to incite the people,” the source said. “The governor further made contacts and it was proved that the clips were brought from the North-East region. He then authorised official rebuttal of the plot.”
Commenting on the development, a retired senior military officer in Kaduna said that from the mood of Kaduna politics, more violence looms ahead in the State.
“Yakowa is now boxed into corner and he doesn’t have the guts and capability to contain the propagandamachine being waged against him,” he told our reporter. “And my concern is security of lives and properties of innocent Nigerians in the town. He is still unable to raise a crack team that can match the campaign and propaganda in the state and in between the gap there may be a serious problem. In short, you cannot govern Kaduna without strategists and propaganda machine, and the man doesn’t have that.”
He argued that Mr. Yakowa has appointed into office only technocrats who lack “mastery”of Kaduna’scomplex politics and manipulations, and that there is “no coordination” in the government.
