Gowon Backs Dialogue With Boko Haram Amid Fresh Attacks

Former head of state, Gen.YakubuGowon, has expressed support for dialog with the Boko Haram sect if it wouldend the insurgency launched by the group in the north.

Gowon spoke with newsmen at the presidential lodge of the Government House,Yola, Adamawa State when he visited the state on a prayer rally. He expressed delight over the warm reception accorded him, saying he had been praying fervently for peace in the country.

On the insurgency by Boko Haram,Gowon said the crisis one of the most serious malaisesin the country but expressed confidence in the federal government’s ability to get to its root. He also endorsed military presence in the affected states until a lasting solution was achieved. “ Also on Thusday, gunmen suspected to be members of Boko Haram sect struck in Gwoza town,the same area they attacked last week.

Theyhad attacked a police station and set a bank and a part of the Local Government Secretariat ablaze. The armed men returned to the town on Thursday and attacked the prisons office with Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and freedan unspecified number of inmates. One civilian was killed during the attack.

When contacted, the police commissioner, Yuguda Abdullahi’s line was picked by anotherperson, who said “the CP is having a meeting please call back.”
