Drug Addicts In Yola Take Lizard Excrements And Gutter Water To Stay High, Says NDLEA

Taking lizard dung and gutter water has become the vogue among drug addicts in Adamawa, the Commander of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in the state, Alhaji Hassan Zungeru, announced on Friday.

Zungeru made the announcement in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Yola.

He said that most of the drug addicts in the state were unemployed youths who could not afford costly hard drugs.

"Lizard dung and gutter water are now becoming an emerging trend because the classified drugs of abuse are beyond the reach of the youths who are mostly unemployed," he said.

He listed Indian hemp, Tramol, rubber solution for vulcanising and cough syrup with codeine as some of the commonly abused substances in state.

The commander said that the development had prompted the agency to collaborate with the Adamawa Emirate Council to get the support of the State Government to embark on sensitisation and awareness tour of rural areas to educate the people against drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking.

He said the first leg of the tour which had reached advanced stage under the leadership of Sarkin Matasa, (Youth Leader of Adamawa Emirate), Abdulaziz Nyako, would cover 33 districts in the emirate.

"Immediately after covering Adamawa Emirate in the first leg of the tour, we will move to other places like Mubi and Numan," he said.

The commander said the sensitisation tour, involving lectures, exhibition and drama by the state's Cultural Troupe and testimonies by repentant drug addicts, had so far been effective.

He said that in some areas visited, some of the addicts shed tears and renounced drug abuse when they heard testimonies from rehabilitated drug victims.

He said that the Sarkin Matasa of Adamawa Emirate, Abdulaziz Nyako, was compiling list of repentant drug addicts as the campaign tour progressed.

" We want government to avail them with its skills acquisition training programme so that after rehabilitation they would have something to do and be useful to themselves and the society," Zungeru said.(NAN)
