AFCON Celebration Unforgettable – Ideye

Super Eagles and Dynamo Kyiv striker Brown Ideye has yet to emerge from the euphoria of winning the Africa Cup of Nations, describing the celebration of being continental champions as unforgettable.

The former Ocean Boys player, who was given a hero’s welcome at his Ukrainian club, promised the fans to replicate his tournament-winning feat at the club and win silverware this season.

“In general, we celebrated (the victory for) about three days. A lot of fans came to the airport to congratulate us. On February 12, we met the President of Nigeria in Abuja. It was unforgettable days for everyone of us,” Ideye told the club website.

“It’s my first trophy of such a great value, but I’m sure it’s not the last. I hope to win a lot both with Dynamo Kyiv and Nigeria.”

Ideye, who started his youth career at Bayelsa United before joining the Flying Eagles ahead of the 2007 U-20 World Cup in Canada, said his wife was the first to congratulate him on the AFCON victory, even as the team were celebrating in the dressing room.

“It was not easy because we were so exited in the dressing room, but my wife congratulated me first,” he said.

“My teammates – Lukman Haruna and Taye Taiwo were very proud of Nigeria. I wish they had also played in the tournament.”

Dynamo Kyiv disappointed their fans after crashing out of the Europa League last month with a 2-1 aggregate loss to FC Bordeaux, but Ideye sees a positive from their misfortune, saying it would allow them concentrate on the domestic league. He said, “Football is very unpredictable. It’s impossible to win all the time. This season our task is to finish second at least in the Ukrainian Premier League and secure the Champions League spot.

“Coach Oleh Blokhin was disappointed with the way we played against FC Kryvbas Kryvyi Rih (in the last league game). He told us home draw is equal to defeat for us. There’s no use discussing that now. We had enough opportunities (to score) but we must work on scoring.”

Ideye has scored 13 league goals so far, but he is still hoping for more chances. He said, “In the first half of the season I missed some goal-scoring opportunities. But now I work under a great and prolific forward during his playing days (Oleh Blokhin). His advices are very helpful.”
