A polio case has been reported in the Nigerian capital, Abuja.

This is despite the efforts of the Federal and State Governments to eradicate the disease.

Nigeria is one of the few countries in the world were polio still exists.

The Minister of State for Health, Muhammed Pate, on Friday, confirmed the new case in Abuja.

“A single case was reported this week, a 27-month-old child currently in the FCT (Abuja).

“The child is from a family that travels back and forth from one of the high risk areas,” he said, implying that the child could have contacted the disease in another state.

The high risk areas are mainly the northern states of Nigeria where several cases were reported last year.

“So far in 2013, there has not been a case from any of the traditionally high risk states. The case in the FCT could be an importation, and illustrates the need for continued vigilance and utmost attention by the FCT,” the minister added.

The governments at all levels have intensified efforts to eradicate polio in Nigeria, although not without its challenges.

Some polio vaccinators were recently killed in Kano while on official duty drawing widespread criticism from the government, health officials, and international organisations.
