Barely 24 hours after the killing of a man at the Shehu of Borno’s private residence, suspected Boko Haram gunmen on Monday shot dead an Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ibrahim Majimi, at his Gwange home in Maiduguri. The slain cleric, according to a resident, had just returned from Kano that fateful day (Monday) before he was trailed and killed. He said the slain Majimi led the Friday and Eid prayers in Gwange ward of Maiduguri metropolis.
The police also said that the killing of Majimi brings to four the number of Islamic clerics slain in the area this year by the suspected gunmen. Confirming the incident yesterday in Maiduguri, the Borno State Police Public Relations Officer, Gideon Jibrin, said that the police command received the reports of killing this morning (yesterday), adding that details of the incident had not been known. He said the remains of the cleric had been buried yesterday, according to Islamic rites at the Gwange Central Cemetery.
On whether any arrests have been made, he however said that no suspect had been apprehended by either the police or the military Joint Task Force (JTF). He further appealed to members of the public to co-operate with the police and JTF, by providing information on the hideouts and modus operandi of the Islamists sect members in the state.
