The Super Falcons got a reward of N600,000 on Saturday for qualifying for the Africa Women’s Championship to be hosted in Equatorial Guinea later in the year.
The Falcons defeated the Mighty Warriors of Zimbabwe 4-0 a fortnight ago in Lagos to qualify for the tournament on a 6-0 aggregate.
President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Aminu Maigari, gave the Falcons N500,000 while national coordinator of women’s teams, Aisha Falode, also presented the with N100,000.
“I am presenting this to you on behalf of the NFF on your qualification for the AWC finals and to encourage the entire team to do better in subsequent matches,” Maigari said.
The team played a goalless draw with the visiting Banyana Banyana of South Africa in a friendly match played at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos on Saturday as coach Kadiri Ikhana aims to improve them ahead of the tournament.
The game was the second leg in a two-legged friendly between the two sides as the South Africans prepare for the women’s football event of the London Olympics. The first leg ended 1-1 in South Africa a few weeks ago.
Ikhana said the team would need a few more matches to get them in a perfect shape for the AWC. He said the introduction of new players in the team was responsible for the few mistakes noticed in during their last two games.
“The players are still blending and they’ll need a few more games to become a complete team. I know that before the AWC begins we’ll have overcome the minor hitches,” Ikhana had said after their qualifier against Zimbabwe in Lagos.
