Former journalist, Owei Lakemfa, has been elected as the Secretary General of the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity, (OATUU), a coalition of trade unions in African countries, in an election at the 10th Congress of the body in Algiers, Algeria.
OATUU, has its headquarters in Accra, Ghana. Part of its resolution Friday was a call for “rapid” and “urgent” solution to the situation in Mali, preserving its territorial integrity, its unity and the exercise of its sovereignty on its territory as a whole.
Lakemfa will be taking over from another Nigerian Hassan Summonu, as head of the continental body.
A former Acting General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Lakemfa, played an active role in January’s anti-fuel subsidy protests.
Lakemfa studied Dramatic Arts at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile- Ife, Osun State and had worked as a journalist with Nigeria’s The Guardian newspaper and Vanguard.
