No fewer than nine people died yesterday, while 19 others were injured in a motor accident in Borno. The accident occurred yesterday morning when two commercial buses collided near Benishiekh along Damaturu-Maiduguri Highway.
Sources said the tyre of one of the commercial buses burst, a development which made the driver to lose control, as the bus eventually collided with another oncoming bus near Benishiekh about 65 kilometres away from Maiduguri, the state capital.
Borno State Command of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) confirmed the accident, adding that the victims were passengers of the two buses.
FRSC Operations Officer, Mr. Amos Thiza said the accident occurred at about 9:00a.m.
“The accident occurred at about 9:00a.m. yesterday near Benishiekh on the Maiduguri-Damaturu Road, where two commercial buses crashed as a result of tyre bust,” Thiza disclosed.
He gave the numbers of the two buses as LG 09 MFA belonging to Mafa Local Government, while the other was marked XA 519 GUB, also Borno registration number. He said a total of 33 passengers were in the two buses.
Thiza further disclosed that three out of the nine that died were children, adding that among the injured ones were 11 males, five females and three children, who had been taken to the Maiduguri Specialist Hospital by the FRSC rescue team for treatment.
