Dantsoho, disclosing this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Sokoto on Monday, said the action followed the indiscriminate erection of such illegal structures in the city.

"These structures had unfortunately distorted the original master plan of the city and we are determined to redress the obnoxious trend," he said.

The commissioner said the exercise had so far been carried out in various parts of the city and its environs in the last two weeks.

The areas so far covered, he said, include parts of Emir Yahaya, Kano, Kaduna and Abdullahi Fodio Roads, among others.

"We carried out the exercise after the expiration of several warnings to the owners of these structures to remove them or risk destruction.

"Some of them complied while others defied our warnings. The exercise will be sustained until the city is sanitised," he said.

According to him, the affected owners of the structures, mainly shops and sheds, will be given the desired types of modern ones they are supposed to erect.

"We will provide adequate parking spaces and landscaping in those areas to further sanitise and secure the city and its environs.

"We will continue to demolish illegal structures without fear or favour without regard to political or ethnic considerations," Dantsoho added.
