Police in Nasarawa State at the weekend paraded 19 suspects arrested in connection with the attack in Agyaragu, a village on the outskirt of Lafia, about a week ago. It was gathered that ten people were confirmed dead in the incident.
“The arm of the law may be slow, but it is steady, and leaves no doubt that we are recording success as we go after the perpetrators of the arson”, Abayomi Akeremale, the state’s commissioner of police said, while parading the suspects before newsmen at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters in Lafia.
The police commissioner did not disclose the identity of the suspects, but said they were trailed and arrested during and after the incident.
“Some of the suspects were arrested at the scene of the crisis, following an information received that some criminals were operating along the railway line in Agyaragu town, but when police got to the scene, it discovered that the incident was beyond robbery as houses and shops were being razed down,” he said.
He said one AK 47 rifle, 28 rounds of live ammunition, and assorted charms among others, were recovered from the suspects, who according to him will be charged to court over the offences of killing, arson and stealing. Akeremale said anyone found to have sponsored or masterminded the incident, no matter how highly placed in the society would be made to face the law.
“I am appealing to those that fled Agyaragu town at the wake of the crisis to return as adequate security has been put in place for the safety of their lives and property”, he said.
