Gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram yesterday attacked a Divisional Police Station at Kala/Balge, Gen Mamman Shuwa’s Local Government, North of Borno, killing five policemen while a police officer was wounded.
Sources said the gunmen who came to Rann, the centre of the attack used Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in the early hours of yesterday.
Rann is about 292 kilometers north of Maiduguri, the state capital. According to a police source, some property destroyed in yesterday’s attacks include a boarding primary school, the local Government Lodge and the official residence of the council chairman. Sources also hinted that some telecom masts were destroyed while some arms were also carted away.
A resident of Rann said the attackers took the policemen unawares and launched the offensive with IEDs as soon as they arrived the police station in the early hours of yesterday. He said by 6am the police station and three other public property, including the residence of the council chairman were still burning even as smoke billowed from the ruined buildings.
In another attack on a beer parlour around the Bayan Quarters, Maiduguri, four people including two women attendants were reportedly shot dead. The Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Borno State Police Command, Gideon Jibrin in a telephone conversation with journalists, confirmed said that there were the two incidents though he did not give further details.
