Lagos arrests policemen, impounds bank vehicle

The Lagos State Government has arrested three policemen and impounded a Hilux van for driving in the Bus Rapid Transit dedicated lane in violation of the state traffic law.

The government also accused the policemen of beating up officials of the state Traffic Management Authority, who cautioned them.

LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Babatunde Edu, on Wednesday told journalists that the incident occurred in the Anthony area of Ikorodu Road on Monday.

According to him, the escort van, which belongs to Access Bank, took the BRT lane in disregard of warning from LASTMA officials.

It was learnt that when the LASMA officials made attempt to turn the driver back, the policemen pounced on them, injuring one in the process.

However, a LASTMA Monitoring Team backed up with policemen later rescued the traffic officials and arrested three police officers. But the driver of the van escaped.

Edu said, “Using the BRT lane is against the law and beating LASTMA men is unacceptable.

“The three policemen in the van were arrested and handed over to appropriate authority.

“The van was not impounded at the scene, we wrote the bank, which later released it to us. The driver of the vehicle is still at large.”

The LASTMA GM added that the state government had written the Commissioner of Police.
