‘Boko Haram Was Local Counterpart Of al-Qaeda, Taliban’

Former Director-General of the State Security Service, Chief Albert Horsfall, on Wednesday said the Boko Haram sect was the local counterpart of al-Qaeda and the Taliban.

Horsfall also warned that the country would witness more violence if the sect extends its operations across the River Niger.

The former secret service chief, who spoke during the Nigerian Bar Association Peace and Security summit in Abuja, added that members of Boko Haram acquired their arms from the camp of the late Libyan leader, Muamar Gaddafi.

He said, “We must see and understand Boko Haram as the local counterpart of al-Qaeda and Taliban because of the proven international connectivity and affiliation of these organisations.

“Let us not forget that the inspirational dogma preached and practiced by al-Qaeda, Taliban and other Pakistan-based extremist sects runs through the veins of Boko Haram practitioners.”

He noted that following the violence in Libya which resulted in the overthrow of the Gaddafi regime, a lot of the arms from his camp had infiltrated into the West African sub-region, especially Niger Republic, Chad, Mauritania, Mali among others.”

On further violence in the country, he said, “I foresee an imminent danger. I fear that the day when Boko Haram ferries its destructive weapons of terror across the River Niger, that day we can foresee the spread of violence and terror across the country!”

He said, “The dreaded trigger may be pulled. For such act of mindless mischief may unleash the retaliatory response of OPC, MASSOB, MEND, among others throughout the country and throw this country into endless carnage.”

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Aloma Mukhtar, raised the alarm over the high level of insecurity in the country.

She said, “Nigeria in recent times has witnessed an unprecedented level of insecurity: inter-communal and inter-ethnic clashes, religious violence, armed robberies, assassinations, gender-based violence and bomb explosions leading to enormous loss of lives and property and the general atmosphere of social tension of the people.”
