Scavenger Docked for Stealing Church Tables

A scavenger, Abdulraham Abdulhamid of Badarawa Tuesday, appeared before a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court charged with stealing cables from HE CAN Church, Badarawa, Kaduna.

The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Simon Abba, told the Court that Abdulhamid, 21, a resident of number 19, Kuriga road, Kaduna was arrested in the church on July 1, after a thanksgiving service.

Abba said the accused was also alleged to have stolen some ceiling fans, movable praying altar, 150 plastic chairs, shovels, cutlasses, church ladders, buckets and tables, five bags of maize, four bags of rice, and a bag of beans.

The prosecutor said offence is punishable under section 196 and 288 of the state laws.

When the charges were read to the accused, he pleaded not guilty. He told the court that he was not aware of  the listed items but confirmed that he only stole burnt cables and wires from the remains of the church.

Senior Magistrate Bashir Shittu said the offence committed was bailable and granted the accused bail in the sum of N80,000 with a reliable surety and adjourned the case to July 23 for hearing.
