One Dies, Others Injured In Auto Crash

A Rover saloon car used for commercial purposes with registration number Lagos ML 854 KJA rammed into a stationary truck on Saturday along the Odukpani axis of Calabar-Itu road in Cross River State killing an unidentified passenger and injuring five others including the driver.

The incident happened during the first rain of the year which brought out debris onto the major streets of Calabar.

Our correspondent who visited the scene of the accident shortly after it occurred observed that the forehead of the deceased was shattered after the car crashed into the stationary Mack truck with registration number Akwa Ibom XA 304 AED.

The truck was said to have been abandoned on the road without caution signs after it developed a fault the previous day.

Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps and the police evacuated the body of the young man, who was dressed in suit, at about 10am.

A lady, who sustained minor injury in the vehicle, Miss Blessing Osim, said she boarded the vehicle at Ugep, adding that when she entered the man was already sitting in front with another girl.

“I do not know where he entered but the vehicle came from Obubra,” she said.

Osim confirmed that the accident happened at about 7am when the rainfall was still high and visibility poor, adding that as a result of excessive speed the driver could not manoeuvre after he saw the truck.

“The driver did not see that the truck was parked here until he got too close to it and he could not bring the vehicle to a stop,” she said.

It was learnt that few minutes after the accident, the vehicle which was laden with plantain and personal goods, was ransacked by hoodlums.

The pockets of the deceased were also emptied of their contents, a situation which made it impossible for the FRSC officials to identify who he was.

When contacted, Sector Commander of FRSC in Cross River State, Mr. Yusuf Salami, said the driver was speeding under poor visibility.

He also said the vehicle was over loaded with both passengers and goods.
