C’River Alleges Complicity in Communal Clash with Ebonyi

Cross River State Government has alleged complicity in the invasion of Adadama community by gunmen who reportedly killed 11 persons on Saturday.

In a statement by the state Security Adviser, Mr. Rekpene Bassey, on Wednesday, the government wondered how the perpetrators were able to gain access through the land and waterways that border both communities even with the heavy presence of security operatives.

The people of Adadama and Amagu in Ebonyi State had been embroiled in clashes over a parcel of land since January 14. The crisis had claimed 11 lives and displaced 2,000 persons.

Following the January 14 attack on Adadama by people suspected to be from Amagu, Bassey said security operatives were deployed in the area, while peace meetings spearheaded by chairmen of Abi and Ikwo local government areas, among other stakeholders, resolved that the warring parties should embrace peace.

He added, “At that point, it was believed that both communities had agreed to give peace a chance pending the amicable resolution of the issue in the dispute. But while the Abi team kept faith and waited for the agreed joint assessment tour, some gunmen invaded Adadama and its precincts.

“The attacks on January 19 were carried out from three flanks on land and water and were coordinated and executed between 9am and10am, bringing to the fore speculation of either official complicity or culpable negligence as reflected in its execution.

“What is even more worrisome is the fact that high calibre lethal service weapons and ammunition used during which innocent persons, including children and adults were murdered and beheaded in a rather grotesque and barbaric manner.”

Bassy said the Cross River State Government feared that there could still be an eruption of hostilities in the area.

Calling on the people of Adadama to maintain peace, the state government implored the Federal Government to find urgent answers to the queries raised.
