School Of Anaesthetics Trains 102 In Six Years

The Coordinator, School of Anaesthetic Studies, Badagry, Lagos State, Dr. Olaniyi Oladapo, has said that the institution has trained over 102 anaesthetists within the six years of its existence.

Oladapo said this at the graduation and induction ceremony of the school in Badagry on Monday.

According to him, prior to the establishment of the institution in 2006, Lagos could only boast of 12 consultant anaesthetists, with only 10 of them available for clinical duties while the health facilities in the state required the services of about 90, hence the need to quickly train more to fill the gap.

Oladapo said, “In a country of about 160 million people, with Lagos having about 18 million, and anaesthetic coverage is just about 150, then there is a serious problem.

“There is the need to specially train this category of experts to reduce work load on surgeons. Experience has shown that 60 to 70 per cent of surgical cases are those with no anaesthetic complications, which can thus be managed by qualified middle manpower anaesthetists. “

The physician added that most primary hospitals are congested. The school, however, found a conducive atmosphere in the Badagry Teaching Hospital where there is enough space for lecture rooms and hostel facilities.

“The cooperation it enjoys from the medical establishment has aided the growth of the school,” Oladapo said.

“What has happened in Lagos is a miracle. Nobody could imagine that within five years, Lagos health system could generate 100 certified anaesthetists for its 25 hospitals, with over 300 surgeons,” he explained.

He commended the authorities of Lagos State Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, for accommodating candidates from the school as resident anaesthetists, saying it was one of the factors that aided the accreditation of the school’s diploma programme by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.
