Okada Ban: 8 Riders, Passenger Arrested For Alleged Violation

Eight commercial motorcyclists, otherwise known as Okada riders, and a passenger, have been arraigned before an Asaba chief magistrate’s court for allegedly violating Delta State Government’s ban on their operations.

The government had restricted movement of Okada in three major cities of Asaba, Warri and Effurun.

Arraigned were Chinenye Uzoegbunam, 26; Chinakwe Tonito, 25; James Enwenzor, 30; Anagboso Henry 28;  Paul Ejike 45; David Chukwuka 32; Bamijo Sunday 21; and a passenger who boarded one of the motorcycles, Douglas Mua, 25.

The accused persons arraigned before Chief Magistrate Sylvester Ehikwe pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge.

Prosecution stated that the accused persons “on November 1, 2012, along Benin/Asaba expressway, Asaba, in the Asaba magisterial district, did operate your motorcycles without wearing a standard protective crash helmet and thereby committed an offence.

“That you Douglas Mua, male, on November 1, 2012, along Benin/Asaba expressway, Asaba, in the Asaba magisterial district, were carried on a motorcycle without wearing  a standard protective crash helmet and thereby committed an offence contrary to paragraph 53 (m), punishable under paragraph 102 (3) Road Traffic (Amendment) Regulation 2012, of Road Traffic law cap R19 vol. IV laws of Delta State.”
