Commissioner of Police, Mrs. Kalafite Adeyemi, and the authorities of The Wings Schools, Iwo, have disagreed over the construction of a mosque opposite the school.
In a petition to the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, the school accused the CP of forcing worshippers out of the mosque.
But Adeyemi, who denied the allegation, said it was wrong for the school to build a mosque beside a church in the front of the school, saying this could precipitate a religious crisis.
She said a respectable distance should be maintained between places of worship in order not to breach the peace in the state.
The school, in a petition signed by the Secretary, Management Committee, Alhaji Rashidi Tijani, accused the CP of “deliberate provocation”, insisting that tolerance by various religions would promote peace.
It said, “The Oluwo-in-Council and Iwo Muslim community’s attempts to reach an amicable settlement have been rebuffed by the Christians and the police. But rather than resort to self-help, we opted to petition your good office.”
The school said it was duly registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission.
It called on the IG to prevail on the police “to desist from their acts of harassment, provocation and intimidation”.
The school also alleged that its workers “are being hounded and threatened with arrest and detention by the police”.
