Dutchman Robin Van Persie is set to captain Arsenal’s first-team to feature in a pre-season tour of Nigerian cities in 2012. The first team players of the Gunners scheduled to make the trip to Nigeria alongside Van Persie include Theo Walcott, Alex Song, Gervinho, Thomas Vermaelen, Per Mertesacker, Mikel Arteta and Andre Arshavin among others.

The Barclays English Premier League concurs, through their marketing director, Angus Kinnear that Arsenal will hold their pre-season event in Abuja after inspecting the National Stadium in the Nigerian capital, Abuja. Marketing director, Angus Kinnear told reporters that the fan base and support from the clubs’ fans is the reason behind Nigeria as their choice for the pre-season tour.

With a fan base of at least 2 million Nigerians, the team is sure to have a promising welcome in the Nations capital. The Nigerian fan base continues to remain an avenue for leading football teams as previous years welcomed English clubs, Manchester United and Portsmouth in Abuja. The nation awaits the Gunners in anticipation although the opposition for the set game is yet to be decided.
