The Bauchi State Chief Magistrate Court presided over by Chief Magistrate Adamu Mohammed Kafin Madaki, has granted bail to a staff of state’s Ministry of Finance, Abbas Ahmed, who was said to have made derogatory remarks about Governor Isa Yuguda on Facebook.
Our correspondent reports that since Daily Trust published the story of Ahmed’s arraignment last Wednesday, several people/ organizations have indicated interest to defend the accused. Police prosecutor, Sergeant Mohammed Garba, earlier told the court that the State Criminal Investigation Department received a request from the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Barrister Almustapha Suleiman, requesting it to investigate the case of “injurious falsehood against the governor. It was gathered that Ahmed, on his Facebook page accused the governor of spending a huge sum of money on the wedding of his son.
When the case was mentioned on Tuesday, lawyers from various organizations led by chairman of NBA in the state, Barrister Mohammed Alhassan, announced appearance for the accused.
Prosecutor Sergeant Garba told the court that police did not come with the accused. The situation was opposed by the defence counsel, and the magistrate ordered the police to produce the accused within 90 minutes.
When he was arraigned, the accused pleaded not guilty to the crime and the defence counsel, Mohammed Alhassan, made oral application for his bail. He also challenged the two charges against the accused.
Magistrate Adamu Moham-med Kafin Madaki granted bail to the accused in the sum of N500.000 and two sureties in like sum. The case has been adjourned to November 15.
