Ex-Dep Minority Leader of Kaduna House Dies At 67

Alhaji Mohammed Sani Iliyasu, the immediate past Deputy Minority Leader of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, died on Monday in Kaduna.

Malam Bala Mohammed, the eldest son of the deceased, says that Iliyasu died shortly after saying his Zuhur [afternoon] prayers. Mohammed said the former lawmaker slumped after the prayers.

He also confirmed that the remains of the ex-lawmaker had been buried according to Islamic rites in Kaduna. He said prayers for the repose of his soul were offered at the Sultan Bello Mosque by a congregation of Muslim faithful.

Iliyasu represented Kawo state constituency in the legislature on the platform of the ANPP and later CPC. He served as the Chairman of the House Committee on Public Finance as well as a member of various standing and ad hoc committees of the house.

Iliyasu, 67, fondly known as "Baba nakawo" in political circles, was survived by three wives and 21 children. The burial was attended by his close associates, top government functionaries and beneficiaries of his philanthropic gestures, including a scholarship scheme.
