Bauchi Assists 2,000 Households

Bauchi State Government has approved the sum of N315 million under the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) project aimed at eradicating poverty in 2,000 households. “The purpose of the programme is to address the intergenerational transmission of poverty and foster social inclusion by targeting the poor, and is implemented through monthly grants aimed at improving healthcare, education or other specified objective.” Meanwhile, as part of efforts to improve healthcare delivery, the state government is currently bankrolling the studies of 395 students in medicine and paramedical fields both in Nigeria and some universities abroad.

Of the number, 354 students are enrolled in Nigerian schools, 38 are studying in Egypt while three are in other countries.In addition, Malami said Vasco Vaginal Fistula (VVF) centre has been established in Ningi Local Council by the Governor Isa Yuguda administration in collaboration with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). “Provision of new water supply scheme (boreholes) and power-generating sets in every general hospital in the state, including the specialist hospital, has ensured steady supply of power and water.”

Hammayo said additional committees would be set up at various levels to oversee the implementation of the CCT programme, including selection of the beneficiary in a free, fair, just and equitable manner in order to succeed. Permanent Secretary of the state MDGs, Sambo Umar Jumbure, reiterated the state’s commitment to eradicating poverty, hunger, combating HIV/AIDS, reducing child mortality, achieving universal primary education and improving maternal health.

Malami further stated that the state had awarded a N2.5 billion contract for the construction of new Bauchi State Specialist Hospital following the conversion of the old one to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital. In addition, Malami said Vasco Vaginal Fistula (VVF) centre has been established in Ningi Local Council by the Governor Isa Yuguda administration in collaboration with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
