Police Arrest 25 Suspects Over Fulani, Gwari Clash

Police in the Federal Capital Territory have arrested 25 persons in connection with the December 29, 2012 clash between Fulani herdsmen and Gwari at Gwako, Gwagwalada Local Government, FCT.

FCT Police Commissioner, Adenrele Shinaba, said this while presenting the report of the committee on the Fulani/Gbagi Communal clash to the FCT Minister, Bala Mohammed, in Abuja on Monday.

Two persons were confirmed killed and 1,500 displaced during the fight sparked by the encroachment of cattles belonging to the Fulani herdsmen on farmland in the area.

The CP said, “Gwako I village, which is the theatre of the ugly incident, lacks a proper leadership. The district head and the village head are not working in tandem and youths of the village are very restive, hostile and lawless. So far, the police have arrested about 25 suspects and they will be arraigned as soon as investigation is concluded.”

Mohammed vowed to fish out those behind the clash, stressing that anyone found culpable would face the music.

The minister, who also set up a nine-member implementation committee, said justice would be done to all affected persons to deter any form of reprisal.

He restated the commitment of his administration to preventing communal clashes in the FCT.

Meanwhile, Chairman, Census Tribunal ‘B’, Mr. Habibu Ma’aruf, has blamed corruption in the judiciary on the society.

Ma’aruf, who made the observation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Abuja on Monday, said he was worried because the judiciary was now being described as “a corrupt institution’’.

He said there was no way the judiciary could be corrupt without societal influence, adding that the public could determine the fate of the judiciary.
