The FCT Police commissioner, Mr. Aderenle Shinaba, says the businessman allegedly killed by policemen after N2.8 million was also allegedly extorted by some officers, was an armed robber and not a businessman as claimed.
Aderenle who fielded questions Wednesday from crime reporters, during his briefing on police preparedness for the Sallah holidays, also disclosed that no such money was either seen with or taken from the suspect.
According the CP, the Command’s Criminal Investigation Department which investigated the allegation said when they checked the suspect’s bank account he did not have such amount.
Aderenle also said that the CID also scrutinised the bank account of the police officer who allegedly extorted the suspect and did not find such amount in his account.
“I don’t know why people keep on spreading false information. I have started investigation on it, we have gone to the man’s bank, I don’t want to mention the name of the bank. The relation, the sister came here and told me lies, and went to radio to tell lies and falsehood.
"When we went to the bank at no time did the man have any money up to N100,000 not to talk of N2.8million. And they said a policeman went to the bank to withdraw the sum of N2.8 million. We also cross-checked the officer’s account and there was nothing like that in his account.
“This is the case of an armed robber, a self-confessed armed robber who was apprehended and who weapons were recovered from and we have all these things on tape. The society is technologically inclined and the police too cannot afford to fold its arms,” he said.
