The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State, yesterday, declared that it was getting set to challenge the victory of the governor-elect in last Saturday’s election, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, at the Election Petitions Tribunal.
The state chapter of the party, which represented a faction in the once ruling party in the state, said it was studying the governorship election result released by INEC on Sunday, with a view to pursuing justice through the appropriate quarters.
This position of the PDP came two days after the national secretariat of the party had congratulated the winner of the election and the other factions in the state had visited Mimiko to felicitate with him on his victory.
In a press release issued in Akure and signed by the state publicity secretary of the party, Mr Wale Ozogoro, the party said it was ‘compiling and collating reports across the state’ and ‘we are heading for the tribunal to seek redress’.
According to Ozogoro, “the party has noticed misapplication of electoral guidelines in the gubernatorial election. We are indeed convinced that justice will be achieved as we intend to seek same at the appropriate time.”
It noted that some sections of the party were not in support of litigation but said: “We want to put it on record that seeking justice at the appropriate quarter is part of the rule of law, which is the bedrock of democratic ethos.
“We, therefore, want to avail ourselves of every available option under the law to seek justice and rekindle the hope and aspiration of all Ondo people that democracy built on fairness, equity, and justice can truly be achieved”.
It claimed that the PDP was the preferred choice of the people, and expressed confidence in emerging winner at the tribunal. His words: “ I equally sympathize with Ondo people and want to assure them that victory will be ours in a short while.
“Indeed you have spoken and demonstrated it through your votes that you wanted a change and a rapid departure from under development, however, your votes will count and hope will be restored in shortest possible time.
“All Ondo people should be resolute, determined and keep faith with Peoples Democratic Party and Chief Olusola Oke as we sincerely hope to get justice through the court”.
