‘Don’t Use Religion To Divide Us’

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Kaduna State has warned, at the inter-denominational service held in Kaduna on Boxing Day, in honour of late governor, Sir Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa, that religion should not be used to divide the organisation.

The occasion was also used to offer special prayers for the state governor, Alhaji Mukhtar Ramalam Yero, during which Rev. Dr Tunde Bolanta was the guest speaker.

The Archbishop of Anglican Communion, Kaduna Diocese, Bishop Josiah Idowu Fearon who is also the Head of the Christian Council of Nigeria (CCN) block of CAN in Kaduna State said, “Our position in CAN here in Kaduna is that we do want anybody to use religion to divide us in Kaduna State. Kaduna is very unique, and that is why our chairman has resisted attempts for those within Kaduna and outside, to divide the peace we have between the Muslim and Christian communities. We don’t want anyone to divide us. We work as one and that is the reason for this service.”

He said, “As far as Kaduna State is concerned, he (late Yakowa) was not a Christian governor, neither was he a governor for Muslims and even those who do not believe in God. We pray at this time that this governor (Yero) who is a Muslim, he is not a governor for Muslims but governor for Christians and everybody”.

On the simplicity of the late governor, he said that “because he (late Yakowa) was just simple, a lot of ordinary people could not just reach him. He was cordoned off even though he loved personal contact.”
