Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha has called on the National Assembly to give priority to the South-East region in the area of states creation.
The governor made the call yesterday at the grand cultural carnival to mark the 80th birthday anniversary of Dr. Alex Ekwueme in Enugu.
He said the creation of an additional state in the South-east will put the zone at par with other zones in the country.“The issue of additional state for South-east is justifiable and long over-due, considering the fact that it is the only region with five states as against six and seven in other zones. I appeal to the presidency to send this request as an executive bill to the National Assembly as a birthday gift to our great leader, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, who symbolizes many things in our nation,” he said.
He added that time has come for Igbo leaders to close ranks and make sacrifices in the pursuit of a common agenda and overall development of the zone.
Governor Okorocha descri-bed Ekwueme as a selfless leader who at the age of 80 has remained a blessing to Igbos and the country.
