Sokoto State Police Command has confirmed that suspected armed robbers killed one person, and injured four others during an attack on a filling station and a business centre within Sokoto metropolis.
This was just as the State Commissioner of Police, Lawal Gambo, said that his men on patrol got to the scene of the attack and found a magazine of ammunition believed to belong to the armed robbers.
The command, however, offered N100, 000 rewards to anyone who that would volunteer information that could lead to the arrest of the bandits.
Eyewitness account indicated that the second incident happened at about 8pm shortly after the armed bandits attacked Malami Petrol Station on Arikila road, shot two members of staff and carted away an undisclosed amount of money.
The bandits, three in number, according to a source, who pleaded anonymity, who rode on a motorcycle, stopped in front of a business centre where GSM recharge cards are sold in bulk, and collected huge sum of money from their victims.
During the operation one of the victims grabbed one of bandits but unknown to him, they were armed and they shot him from the rear and he later died in a hospital.
Commenting on the incident, the CP said, “These hoodlums often monitor our movement, immediately we are out of a place on patrol to somewhere else they will come and strike”.
On the recovered ammunition, he said, “I would not know where that one (magazine) came from. However, you know that this country has the most porous borders. In addition, what has been happening in the port, you know the quantity of arms that has been coming into this country. That was why the IGP established border patrol here in Sokoto State in conjunction with other security agencies.”
