Govt faults FRSC

Govt faults FRSC

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola on Monday faulted the announcement by Federal Road Safety Corps that the Third Mainland Bridge would be closed from July 1. He said the corps did not have jurisdiction on roads within the municipality of a state, but on trunk roads alone.

Speaking to State House correspondents, Fashola said the announcement was an encroachment of territory. He said, “A trunk road by definition is a road that connects two states like Lagos Ibadan Expressway, that’s where the FRSC should be, not within the territory of the municipality of a state but having said that, it is that encroachment of responsibility.

“It is unfortunate that FRSC had gone to make this announcement. If you look into the constitution, the only jurisdiction for management of traffic that the Federal Government has is on federal trunk roads.”He said although the responsibility for managing the Third Mainland Bridge was that of the Federal Government, maintaining a bridge and managing traffic are two different responsibilities.

“The traffic management responsibility belongs to the state. A bridge that crosses a lagoon within the territory of a city lies within its municipal control for traffic,” Fashola said.

The governor, who said the state government had managed such partial closure in the past through the joint efforts of the various traffic control agencies, urged the residents not to panic.
