Robbery Attack Rumour Paralyses Auchi

Business activities were on Tuesday paralysed in Auchi, Edo State, following a robbery attack rumour in the city.

The rumour forced banks and other businesses in the town to hurriedly close, just as residents remained indoors for fear of attack.

Three weeks ago, gunmen had stormed the city, attacking banks and public places, including police stations with explosive devices. The invasion resulted in the killing of 10 persons.

Sources said letters were sent to the branches of Fidelity and Zenith banks in the city, informing them of planned attacks on their premises.

The development, it was further learnt caused fears among residents.

The Chairman, Bankers’ Forum, Auchi, Sanusi Bash, described the situation as worrisome.

Expressing concern over recurrent attacks on some banks in the town, Bash called for the deployment of more security personnel in the area.

He said, “They wrote a letter and dropped copies at Fidelity and Zenith bank branches that they will come back in December; that the soldiers and police cannot withstand them.

We are scared; please let the government provide security.”
