The Ondo State Police Command has arrested three staff of Ondo West Local Government Council over the death of a 71-year-old woman, Victoria Ogunti.
The incident occurred at Oluwabamigbe Street, Newtown area in Ondo town when the trio who work at the Rate Department in the council went to collect shop rent from the septuagenarian.
The suspects, Atinuke Oyesanmi, Adeyosoye Folasade and Olasupo Abodede had a verbal confrontation with the deceased and in the process one of them pushed her and she became unconscious.
An eyewitness said efforts made by passersby and neighbours to revive her proved abortive and she died on the way to the hospital.
The incident caused pandomonium as angry neighbours of the deceased started beating the suspects. The swift intervention of police officers from the Yaba Division, Ondo, restored order in the area while they took the suspects into custody.
"If not for the quick intervention of the police, the three people would have been mobbed to death by the residents of the area because they were watching the drama between the Madam Victoria and the three Local Government workers. The policemen rescued them and took them to the police station," an eyewitness said.
According to a source within the police, the suspects have been transferred to the homicide section at the force headquarters in Akure for further investigation. The state Police command spokesperson, Adeniran Aremu could not be reached for comment.
