Jonathan, PDP Leaders Set For Ondo 4 years ago 0

President Goodluck Jonathan is expected to lead top Peoples Democratic Party leaders to Akure, Ondo State, on Saturday to drum up support for the party ahead  of  the October 20 governorship election in the state.

According to the PDP  National Vice-Chairman, South-West, Mr. Segun Oni, the President will  witness the concluding stage of the party’s campaign  in the state.

Chief Olusola Oke is the PDP’s candidate for the election.

Oni, who addressed a press conference in Akure on Thursday, said the PDP National Campaign Committee for the election had been supportive of Oke.

He said,“Our candidate has been to all  the nooks and crannies of the  state and that is a campaign.

“The real campaign happens at the wards and local governments where the   voting will  take place.

“What we are showing is strength and support for Oke. There is a state campaign committee; the national is to check and see if  everything has been done.

“If there is anything they feel is to be done, they will call the attention of the state campaign committee.

“Also, if the there is anything, the state campaign committee need, it will call the attention of the people on top.”

The PDP chief alleged that some parties had concluded plans to rig the poll.

The former Ekiti State governor said, “The security agencies should for once take charge and do Nigeria proud. If you have a country where people can bring in thugs and overrun the will of the people on Election Day, will they not prepare to have thugs to override the will of the people on ordinary days? Will they not decide to have a private army of destroyers like Boko Haram?  Will they not feel free that they can do it?”

Oni said the state is fortunate to have  army and police reinforcements. He also appealed to the people  to shun electoral violence.

“I am appealing to security agencies to do their job. Fortunately, there is a brigade of the army here and the police would reinforce from different parts of the country. This is the only election taking place. Other security agencies will  be there; the State Security Service  will do their job. Let us seize this opportunity to ensure that if anybody is seen with any firearm, such a person should be in trouble.

“I appeal to the people of the state to know that  thugs are human. They brought thugs to us in Ekiti during my re-run. Some of them carried people back to Lagos as dead bodies. They could not make a noise because where would they say they came from? I did not hire a single thug but the people of Ekiti were waiting and they were ready.

“Some people tried to snatch ballot boxes in a place called Iro Federal in Ekiti, the people ran after them. They ran into the bush but the people continued to pursue, they burnt their vehicles. It is because of the will of the people. One thug with a gun against a hundred people who are committed is dead. People of Ondo state should do everything to resist any oppression,” he said.
