Fire Incidents Kill 195 Persons, Destroy 934 Houses

No fewer than 934 houses were gutted by fire in Lagos State between January and October 2012. One hundred and ninety five persons died in the fire incidents.

However, the state Fire Service said it was able to save properties worth N146bn from being destroyed.

A report from the service, which gave the statistics, added that 12 buildings collapsed within the period.

The report explained that although the service got 1,193 fire calls in 10 months, 259 of them were false calls, while 934 were authentic.

It added that the 195 persons that died included 156 people that were recorded dead in the June 3 Dana airplane crash.

The report also showed that there were 70 rescue calls, saying 47 victims were rescued alive.

A breakdown of the fire incidents showed that 137 houses were gutted in January, 166 in February, 172 in March and 127 in April.

In May, there were 136 cases of fire, 92 in June, 88 in July, 95 in August, 92 in September and 88 in October.

The report also showed that properties estimated at N20.7bn were saved in January, N20.9bn in February, N22.8bn in March, N21.8bn in April and N23.3bn in May.

In June, the state fire service said it saved properties worth N8.2bn, N6.96bn in July, N5.7m in August, N7.4bn in September and N8.2bn in October.

The report indicated that three people died in fire incidents in January, eight in February, 10 in March, and one in April.

The 156 official figures of victims of Dana crash were the deaths recorded in June. In July, there was one death as a result of fire, two in August, three in September and six in October.

The fire service recorded 19 false calls in January, 29 in February, 42 in March, 27 in April, 25 in May, 30 in June, 22 in July, 11 in August, 19 in September and 35 in October.
