APC won't give up power easily in 2019 - Fani-Kayode

- The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has begun its road to recovery after a turbulent time

- One of those vying to lead the party out of its present quagmire is the former governor of Ogun state, Otunba Gbenga Daniel

- A former minister of aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, is however of the opinion that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) won't give up power easily in 2019

A former minister of aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has charged PDP faithfuls across the country to gear up for a tough general election in 2019.

Fani-Kayode made the call on Wednesday, October 18, during the official declaration of bid for national chairman of the PDP by the former Ogun state governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel.

The former minister who declared his support for Otunba Daniel's candidacy by endorsing him at the event, tasked PDP supporters across the country to be wary of the APC's antics ahead of the 2019 election.

His words: “Anyone who thinks the APC will give up power easily in 2019 is deluded. This is a quest to save our nation. We must ensure that the destiny of this nation is once again placed in the destiny of our people and that we make the right choice.”

Declaring his support for Otunba Daniel, Fani-Kayode hammered on the need for the PDP to elect a younger man to lead the party.

Legit.ng checks reveals that Otunba Daniel is the youngest of all the PDP candidates from the southwest.

Former minister of education; Professor Tunde Adeniran is 72, Chief Bode George is 71, Professor Taoheed Adedoja is 66 while Otunba Daniel is 61.

Fani-Kayode said: “There are other people that are involved in this. In a game of power, even though we are one family, we must point out the weaknesses of your opponents.

“But, we must set apart those that are first among equals and that in my view is Gbenga Daniel. We have those in the race who have led the party in the past and I have immense respect for them.

“If in a nation like Austria, s 31-year old young man become the chancellor. Why are talking about the election of people who should be elder statesmen at this point that we should be going to for consultation, will now say they want to vie with somebody that is considerably younger than them.”

Delivering his speech at the event, Otunba Daniel stated that one of his focus if he emerges as the national chairman of the PDP, is to bring back many aggrieved members of the party who left.

His words: “In the last few weeks I have gone round visiting many of our leaders and stakeholders.

“I believe that I have sufficiently interacted with many of our party leaders, elders and members to have identified various fault lines which needed closing up so that we can return to the ideals and vision of our founding fathers.

“One of my focus as the national chairman is to bring back many of our party men who have left. My ultimate goal is to work towards the victory of our party in the 2019 general elections and in all other elections in between.

“To achieve this, I am prepared to work with all leaders of our party, various interest groups and individuals.”

Otunba Daniel reiterated the need for a more focused, disciplined and reinvigorated PDP which he argued must transcend the desire to merely hold office, stressing that it should rather be a clarion call to provide an alternative political platform to offer distinctive leadership.

He said the PDP must should be a platform whose ideology is based on collective governance, all round inclusive leadership, national unity and economic development.

“Doing otherwise will be sending our fatherland to eternal political condemnation, neo-dictatorship and totalitarianism.

“This will not only make mockery of the sacrifices of men and women who paid the ultimate price so our nation can enjoy the freedom and unity we so much deserve but equally erode the collective vision of a more prosperous Nigeria,” he added.

He went on to say the PDP was and still remains the greatest political party, not only in Nigeria, but in the entire continent of Africa.

Meanwhile, former president Goodluck Jonathan has advised PDP members not to make the mistake of making wrong choices at the forthcoming national convention of the party scheduled for December.

Jonathan gave the advice when he received an aspirant for the party’s national chairmanship position, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, in his residence in Abuja on Tuesday, October 17.

He stated that the PDP at this moment, needed leaders who in the face of persecution, would remain courageous to protect the party’s interest and defend democracy.
