Northern leaders and elders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have dismissed Governor Ayodele Fayose’s declaration to contest for the presidential ticket of the party.
The leaders on Tuesday, October 10, insisted that the party will stand by its zoning arrangement ahead of the 2019 general elections, Vanguard reports.
They maintained that nothing would alter the zoning formula of the party.
“I want to appeal to you to give to the party the very best in the positions that have been zoned to us. Let us, therefore, give to the party, men and women of impeccable integrity,” former information minister, Professor Jerry Gana said at the meeting
“Whatever the Fayoses of this world may be doing, the party has resolved that the presidential candidate will come from one of the three zones in the North.”
Similarly, the chairman of the PDP national caretaker committee, Ahmed Makarfi, urged party members to respect the zoning formula of the party.

He said: “The Port Harcourt convention remains valid and one of the decisions taken at that convention was zoning. Micro-zoning does not have binding effect.
“If a position is zoned to the North and you are from the North and you come to buy form, we will sell for you."
Meanwhile, it appears former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, has reportedly signified his intention to contest in the 2019 presidential election and has begun to mobilise support in the southeast zone.
A socio-political organisation, Atiku Care foundation, stated that the former vice president would contest the 2019 presidential election to bring about a positive change in all sectors of the economy, Vanguard reports.
The national chairman of the organisation, Ambassador Aliyu Bin, made the disclosure when inaugurating the Anambra state executives chapter of the foundation in Awka.
